The Mongoose Goes to the Outer Banks

We're back from our vacation/babymoon to Ocracoke! If you need wild and unpredictable weather to disrupt anything on the Outer Banks, then we are the folks to call. We'll schedule our vacation during the time you need a distraction (for an agreeable fee) and PRESTO, instant wacky weather. Last year there was a freak spring Nor'easter that washed out Hwy 12 and this year we contended with gale force winds for several days that forced some of the ferry services to be suspended. Between the wind and the cooler temperatures, this year's beach time was hampered a bit. The free microdermabrasion was nice at first, but after a while, blowing sand just plain stings. And I can tell you that wearing a sweatshirt and long pants to the beach definitely does not create a stunning silhouette for pregnant ladies. We did have some good times and were able to get some fun pictures to share. Here they are.

Here John and I are enjoying the sunset on Silver Lake Harbor. The wind is finally calm, so the bugs came out instead.

This one I like to call The Three Nags - Kim, myself and this pretty painted pony.

And I bet you can guess what I like to call this one, but since this is a family show, The Three Hind Ends sounds like a more appropriate choice.

John and Harry rented a sit-on-top kayak for a day on the waves. Here John maneuvers his craft with great precision and expertly surfs a wave to shore. My champion!!!

In contrast, Harry, somewhat less expertly, is exiting his craft (whether he was ready or not). It must be pointed out that John also experienced similar exits and while there is no photographic evidence, there are several eye witnesses.

We took a sunset cruise on the Schooner Windfall, the boat we were married on last year. The weather was colder and some of us were rounder, but it was a lovely cruise none the less. No one was attacked by pelicans, but that is for another posting.

Sister Ellie did not care much for the wind, but she did manage to dig a comforting nest in the sand from which she could shoot us pointedly pathetic looks.

For all you lighthouse aficionados, this is the Ocracoke Lighthouse from the Schooner Windfall as we sailed out of the harbor. Our cottage this year was several houses down from the lighthouse. Not a great idea in hindsight, too much traffic in the area. We can't wait for Little Mongoose to enjoy some great beach trips with us in the coming years.
